I once read on Wikipedia that there are only seven basic plots in literature that one can follow. Which probably explains why I should stop comparing Avatar to Pocahontas...they couldn't really help it hehe.

Naturally, I can't find it but I did come across a site with 20 basic plots and another with 36 dramatic situations. No wonder I've been feeling a little deja vu-ish with new movies =P
